New Featured Series

Note:  In the last issue, we announced a new series of articles being written on the chakras and their corresponding Ancient Egyptian temple or structure. This article begins the new year with the first chakra and its relationship to the temple on the island of Philae. For those unfamiliar with chakras, in Hinduism and its spiritual systems of yoga, a chakra is considered an energy node in the human body. The word comes from the Sanskrit "cakra" meaning "wheel, circle", and sometimes referred to as the "wheel of life". [1] There are seven main chakras aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra is associated with a certain color, multiple specific functions, aspects of consciousness, and other characteristics.

The Root of All Goodness

The first chakra and the ancient temple at Philae

By Samone Myers

The temple on the Island of Philae touches most spiritual travelers on a deep level. Not just because of its natural beauty, as can be seen in the photo, but for its innate primordial connections to creation itself. “Beginnings” is what Philae represents. Appropriately, this temple is surrounded by the waters of the Nile much like the fetus in the womb. And as a part of the Mystery Schools in Ancient Egypt, Philae was where initiates would learn about creation, the Divine Blueprint from which we all originate, and mastering the physical body.

This temple is dedicated to the Goddess Isis, and the exquisite scenes and hieroglyphs speak of her being associated with birth, creation, and magic. Isis is considered the Divine Mother, and carrier of the Blueprint of the Divine Feminine, while her brother and husband, Osiris is attributed with the Blueprint of the Divine Masculine [2]. A temple on a nearby island (now destroyed) is dedicated to Osiris. [3] Together, they created the Divine Child, Horus. A depiction of this can be seen in the room called the Birthing Chamber (See image on the right). It is of the combined energy in perfect balance that Initiates of the Mystery Schools were to attain.

Initiates and present day travelers to Egypt can work with the energy of Philae to balance their first chakra. Referred to as the root chakra because of our connections to the Earth, the first chakra energy can assist in clearing “deep rooted” patterns repeated over lifetimes. It can also teach us methods for bringing higher energy in, reminding our bodies that We are the Divine Blueprint in perfect balance and harmony.

The kundalini lies coiled in the root chakra, ready to uncoil and bring man to his highest spiritual potential in the crown chakra. This center is located in the region between the genitals and the anus. Although no endocrine organ is placed here, it is related to the inner adrenal glands, the adrenal medulla, which is responsible for the fight and flight response when survival is threatened. In this region is located a muscle that controls ejaculation in the sexual act. Due to this, a parallel can be drawn between the sperm cell and the ovum, where the genetic code lies coiled (the kundalini) and ready to express itself as a fully developed human being. [3]

To maximize the benefit of the energies of Philae, there are a number of methods for clearing and balancing chakras prior to arriving, as well as while you are there. Some are well known, while others have emerged as additional tools in which to enhance sacred ceremony. Beginning with the understanding that the color red is associated with the root chakra or called, Muladhara.  Red governs the basic human desires: to survive, the desire to eat, to have warmth and shelter, and to feel protected. These are the strongest and most basic of human desires, and balanced root chakra energy creates calmness.

Significantly, the energy of red and the root chakra contain the primary 8 cells that have all knowledge, including creation itself, and remain the only cells in your body that do not change in your lifetime. [4] The color red has also been associated with bone strength, blood circulation, the immune system and the lower intestines. This chakra color can bring passion and desire into a bland or melancholy life. Therefore, at a minimum, wearing the color red on the day you visit the island can help lift the chakra energy and remind your physical body that it is the Divine Blueprint. [5]

Also, gemstones that are associated with the base chakra can be beneficial to clearing and balancing. These include: red garnet, black onyx, hematite, jet, red jasper, carnelian black obsidian, and smoky or red quartz. In addition to bringing gemstones with you, there are two other activities to consider prior to your journey to Egypt, and while you are there. The first is to contemplate jewelry you wear during your sacred journey. Consider looking ahead at the itinerary to determine which day you will be visiting which temple. Then, to enhance the experience at Philae and energy of the first chakra, consider wearing jewelry that contains the gemstones mentioned above or is specifically designed for the root chakra. An example is a bracelet made with the seed of the Rudraksha tree and faceted quartz crystals (amplifies whatever it is with) and silver (helps with balance). [7] The other activity of interest is paying attention to your dreams, and the symbols, which reveal details about the first chakra. Root chakra symbols include dreaming of the Earth, survival, grounding, stillness, or elephants.

Finally, each of the temples associated with the Ancient Mystery Schools has its own tone. An interesting exercise to do is to have a group begin sacred toning in the sanctuary with the intention of finding the tone of the temple. Intuitively after a few minutes, a particular note will emerge and the participants will harmonize beautifully. Also, when done in combination with the C note, the tone associated with the root chakra, other benefits can be realized. These can range from mastering the physical body, to grounding, individuality, stability, security, health, as well as increase courage and patience.

Regardless of which or these methods are used, performing sacred ceremony at Philae is one of the most spiritually rewarding experiences we can have in a lifetime. Blessed with these ancient temples in tact or restored, and equipped with the knowledge about the Ancient Mystery Schools, your visit to the island of Philae will allow you to re-member and experience the root of all goodness.

It used to be surrounded by 365 altars on which priests laid daily offerings of milk (representing milk of the Gods), making Bigeh of significant and equal importance to the island of Philae. The image of the Creation Scene at Philae shows the God, Khnum holding the Divine Child (Horus).

Ancient Egypt Cities Leveled by Massive Volcano, Lava Find Suggests

Dan Morrison in Cairo for National Geographic News

Egyptian archaeologists today announced that they have unearthed traces of solidified lava on the northern coast of Sinai that date to around 1500 B.C.—supporting accounts that ancient Egyptian settlements were buried by a massive volcanic eruption in the Mediterranean, they say.

The archaeological team, led by Mohamed Abdel Maqsoud of Egypt's Supreme Council for Antiquities, found houses, military structures, and tombs encased in ash, along with fragments of pumice, near the ancient Egyptian fortress of Tharo, on the Horus military road. Tharo is located close to El Qantara, where the Nile Delta meets the Sinai peninsula (Egypt map).

According to Zahi Hawass, secretary general of the council, the lava and ash hail from Santorini, an eastern Mediterranean volcano that has been linked to the myth of Atlantis. (Related: "'Atlantis' Eruption Twice as Big as Previously Believed, Study Suggests" [August 23, 2006].)

The Ancient Egyptians turned to outside help for magic

Mati Milstein, National Geographic News

Newly interpreted symbols reveal that the Egyptians turned to outside help for magic. Passages inscribed on the walls of the pyramid of King Unas´ Pyramid at Saqqara, reveal that the Egyptians counted with the magical assistance of Semitic Canaanites. The Canaanite spells were used to protect mummified kings against poisonous snakes, and date from between 2400 to 3000 B.C. Moshe Bar-Asher, Hebrew professor at the Hebrew University, has stated that this is a discovery of utmost importance. According to Bar-Asher, "Almost all the words found in these texts are also found in the Bible."

Art in Ancient Egypt: Papyrus

The word paper is derived from "papyrus", a plant, which was cultivated in the Nile delta. Papyrus sheets were derived after processing the papyrus plant. Some rolls of papyrus discovered are lengthy, up to 10 meters. The technique for crafting papyrus was lost over time, but was rediscovered by an Egyptologist in the 1940s. Papyrus texts illustrate all dimensions of ancient Egyptian life and include literary, religious, historical and administrative documents. The pictorial script used in these texts ultimately provided the model for two most common alphabets in the world, the Roman and the Arabic. For full article, click here.

Note: On Luminati Sacred Journeys, included in your itinerary is a stop at one of the best Papyrus stores in Cairo. There you will be treated to a live demonstration on how papyrus is made, and are able to purchase some of the best examples of Ancient Egyptian art.
