Note: The series of articles on the Mystery Schools in Ancient Egypt continues. This month’s article features the temple, Edfu dedicated to Horus, and its corresponding chakra, the solar plexus (3rd) chakra.
Stand in Your Power
The Ancient Temple at Edfu and its connection to the Solar Plexus
By Samone Myers
The ancient Egyptian temple at Edfu is one of best preserved. The illustration to the right done by David Roberts in 1849 is the view from under the portico toward the entrance. It shows the scale and magnificence even before the Egyptian Authorities uncovered it, and restored sections. This temple is dedicated to the God,
Horus. Horus, the Divine child, is the result of the Divine Masculine (Osiris) and Divine Feminine (Isis) energy. Appropriately the temple was designed to be associated with the solar plexus, which is about self identity, esteem and power. Since this chakra is the 3rd chakra, it is also apt considering Osiris, Isis and Horus represent the Divine Trinity of Father, Mother, and Child energy.
So what exactly does it mean to ’stand in your power’? As the famous story of Osiris, Isis and Horus illustrates, eventually ‘light’ comes into balance with ‘darkness.’ The main character, Horus avenges his father’s death, but finds his own struggles, weaknesses, strengths, emotions, and life’s trials and tribulations are
only revealing aspects of Self. It is in owning our fullness – everything we are – embracing light and darkness – are we able to be Self-empowered.
The third chakra as depicted in the image on the left is associated with the color yellow. It is located in the upper abdomen, above the navel, and below the chest. Its element
is fire and its sense is sight. Of all of the gods and goddesses in Egypt, Horus is best known for representing sight. The Eye of Horus symbol is both the left and right eye with the balance of the two known as the third eye.
Core functions of the 3rd chakra are transforming energy into matter, matter into energy, ideas into reality, finding purpose, self esteem, self identity, and relationships with people. An excellent way to know if this chakra is out of balance is by focusing on this chakra. Like a child misbehaving, sometimes it just needs
attention. If this chakra is blocked or limited, physical and mental consciousness will exhibit various manifestations. Blockages in the solar plexus can result in a lack of will or strong intent to take action. This will be experienced in the body as a lessening of the bio-chemicals that create the sensation or emotion of will and purpose. Emotionally and mentally this will be experienced in corresponding mind states such as apathy or boredom. [1]
The energies at Edfu allow you to have this communication with your power chakra to determine if it is blocked. Evening is the best time to experience Edfu when the crowds have subsided. [2] To heighten the energy, toning in the sanctuary is an extremely powerful technique. This is due to the builders of the Ancient Mystery
School temples incorporating sacred geometry and sound into the architecture.
"The most common proportions found in ancient Egyptian temple architecture correspond to the most harmonious intervals found in music: the octaves, fifths, fourths, thirds and sixths. In the temple of Horus at Edfu, the dimensions of one chamber's measurements of width to height equaled 2:3, which defines an interval
of a fifth in music.” [3]
Travelers who journey to Egypt with a sound healer, such as Mark Patterson [4] can further enhance the energies of the ancient temples by performing sacred sound or toning. ‘E’ is the tone
for this temple identified with the ‘Me’ essence. [5] When toning in a harmonious group, it reverberates throughout the temple stones and moves straight into solar plexus like a “call from home.” This ancient connection to music and this tone was discovered first-hand during a journey in November 2005. Our group was allowed private time in the sanctuary, in spite of massive crowds. One tourist (not a part of our group) did not seem to want to leave when all other groups were asked to vacate
the sanctuary. He intuited something special was about to occur. He was right. The following is his description of our group sacred toning with intentions for balancing our third chakra.
“There I was in front of the main Alter in the Temple Sanctuary at Edfu. A feeling of knowingness and familiarity overwhelmed me. A moment passed. Then my ears were filled with the sound of gods and goddesses chanting one of the most beautiful melodies. I smiled and closed my eyes, and for a short period of time felt as
though I was transported back to the times of the pharaohs and high priestesses. The experience was breathtaking and a tour of Egypt should be at the top of everyone’s destination list.”

Edfu is powerful in its structure, its presence and its corresponding energy center within us; the solar plexus. This Egyptian temple, among others offers travelers on a spiritual quest to utilize what the ancients intended. This is a rare opportunity considering most of our rigid, lack-luster daily routines. When you are
ready, and desire to step into your mastery, Edfu Temple awaits to allow you to stand in your power.
