Note from Shelia

Greetings,

It seems hard to imagine that Luminati Egyptian Travel has been in business for over ten years. I have enjoyed being able to share Ancient Egypt with others, and continue to look for ways to improve our journeys, which benefit all parties involved. One of the ways this is done is through our Producing Partners Program. This has attracted a wonderful line up of Guest Speaker/Hosts.

Two remarkable journeys this year are hosted by Guest Speakers. First, is Internationally-Acclaimed Sound Healer, Mark Patterson’s journey, "The Power of Sacred Sound", (Oct 5-18, 2008). Join Mark on a sacred toning/sound quest inside the ancient temple sanctuaries, at the Sphinx, and inside the Great Pyramid. Just as magical will be The Temple of Human" journey with Tania Marie and Mykal Aubry  (Dec 3-13, 2008). Empower your Being through the energies of the Ancient Mystery Schools, Reiki, the chakras, and visionary art. Complete your journey inside the Kings Chamber on the full moon of 12/12/2008.

We also have a new look to our web site, which reflects the expansion of its line of tours to Egypt. In addition to our regular holistic journeys, we now offer historical, archaeological and golfing tours. There are several new exciting ones beginning in 2009 to include:

•   HISTORICAL:  Follow the Holy Family Trail with NY Times Best Selling Author, Paul Perry  (Two trips offered  Jan 11-24, 2009 & Jan 26 – Feb 8, 2009)

•   ARCHAEOLOGICAL:  Oracles of Ancient Egypt with NY Times Best Selling Authors, Raymond Moody and Paul Perry (Feb 21 – March 6, 2009)

•   GOLFING: Through the Sacred Geometry of Golf with LPGA Tournament Golfer, Jaime Zimron (April 22 - May 3, 2009)

In celebration of these wonderful changes, we will feature each of our Guest Speakers over the next several issues, beginning with Paul Perry.  Read this article below based on a personal interview titled, “Bringing a Biblical Tale to Life” by Samone Myers.

Thank you for being a part of making Luminati Egyptian Travel what it is today!

Bringing a Biblical Tale to Life

By Samone Myers

It isn’t often that we are allowed to experience something right out of the Bible today. But, NY Times best selling author, Paul Perry has managed to give us an opportunity to do just that. It began while he was cruising the Nile in Egypt. Paul, son to a non practicing Baptist Minister father and Adventist mother, had always been mildly curious about religion. On that day ten years ago, looking out along the banks of the Nile, it occurred to him how very little had changed in Egypt for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. As he watched, he spotted three Bedouin men riding donkeys over the desert. It reminded him of the Three Wise Men. It also jogged his memory about the Holy Family seeking refuge in Egypt during Christ’s childhood years, avoiding persecution from King Herod.  He thought it odd that the Bible only focused on three adult years of Jesus’ 33 years, and very little was known about Christ’s childhood.

This prompted Paul to ask questions while in Egypt of various people about what they knew about Jesus and the Holy Family being there, and reportedly staying as long two and half years. To his amazement, Muslim, and Coptic Christians, who represent 10% of Egypt’s population, could recite tale after tale concerning where the Holy Family went and what happened while they were there. This intrigued Paul enough to dig deeper, and it is what ultimately motivated him to do a book titled, Jesus in Egypt and subsequently a documentary, “The Lost Years.”

Coming from a western point of view, which has a tendency to be skeptical or as Paul describes himself, “Cynical, but open-minded,” challenged how far he was going to get with this material. At every turn, however, he was surprised by how readily available information was concerning what some call, The Holy Family Trail. He was even fortunate enough to have an audience with the Egyptian Coptic Pope, Pope Shenouda III. It was during this meeting and many conversations with Leaders in the Coptic Church that he gained an understanding of oral tradition in its truest sense.

Unlike the telephone game where you whisper in one person’s ear and by the time it gets back around, the meaning and words change, oral tradition in the Coptic Church is treated no differently than the written word. In fact, Paul soon discovered that other than Western thinking, many indigenous cultures around the world hold oral tradition sacred. One of the ways he became convinced that verbal traditions were to be taken seriously is how these ancient tales were passed down through the ages. It is done in front of an entire congregation, to ensure checks and balances among the people. Or in the other words, if someone is over heard telling a tradition inaccurately, another corrects him or her to maintain the integrity of the story.

This and the fact, which Paul also realized, that even the Bible is based on oral tradition, allowed him to see this biblical tale from a new perspective. He also acknowledged that the books of the Bible were written and selected over a hundred years after the actual events occurred. In combination, this encouraged Paul to listen to the stories regarding where the Holy Family went in Egypt and what took place in a whole new light. Never-the-less, still being somewhat cynical, he decided to ask for a sign. That sign occurred while he was visiting the Church of Saint Mark in Assiut, Egypt, which is said to have been erected at the end of the Holy Family’s Trail. It is here where an angel appeared to Joseph informing him that King Herod was dead, and announced it was safe to return to Israel.

The Holy Family, according to tradition, stayed six months at this location. A sacred stone is revered where Jesus allegedly slept. When Paul was allowed to touch the stone, the Coptic Priest asked him to say a prayer. His prayer was simple. “Show me a sign that the Holy Trail is real.” Not thinking any more about it, he went outside and in spite of the diming light of evening, snapped a photograph of the Church of Saint Mark. Since he used a digital camera, he was able to look immediately at the image. To his utter surprise, there were lights shining down on the top of the Monastery from no known source. He showed the cab driver, and the driver nonchalantly said, “Yes, that is the Light of Mary. People see it all of the time.” Paul was sold, and the photo shown at the right, has since been blessed as an official modern-day vision.

As he continued his research, he discovered that the Holy Family Trail is filled with incidents described as visions and so-called, miracles. For instance, at Samannud, previously called Sebennytos or Zeb-nyter, the well for the town had run dry. Upon the arrival of the Holy Family, according to Coptic tradition, Jesus made it have water again, and it still produces fresh water to this day. Numerous stories also exist of those who have drunk from it claiming to be healed of various ailments. In addition, although visions of Mary have appeared along the Holy Trail off and on over the years, one of the most famous began in April, 1968 in Zeitoun, a suburb of Cairo. The figure of Mary floated over the Coptic Orthodox Church for sometimes minutes, in one instance eight hours, and off and on for over one year! [See video] At the time, when the world was disheartened by the Vietnam War and uprisings in Israel and Palestine, to the thousands of people who witnessed this, it restored faith on an unprecedented scale, regardless of the witnesses’ upbringing or religious beliefs.

Listening to Paul talk about his research and how it was to uncover this information, it was clear that he had been moved by his experiences. I was also aware that he had decided to bring people to Egypt to follow the Holy Family Trail, and asked him what he expected people to gain from this journey. His answer was profound. (Paraphrasing) “Following in the footsteps of the Jesus and the Holy Family is like discovering an undiscovered Holy Land. Egypt is very ancient and unspoiled. For those who visit, it allows, especially Americans, since we live in such a sterile environment, for an added dimension to faith and to have a biblical experience.” The meaning was not lost on me, and I could not help wonder since our world is in yet another state of conflict if we are over due for Mary’s return along the Holy Trail.

Post Remarks:

Paul Perry is the co-author of several New York Times bestsellers, including the Closer to the Light series and Saved by the Light, which was made into a popular movie. Virgin Mary Sightings Divide Egypt Copts

By Sherif El-Dawakhli, IOL Correspondent

CAIRO — Although Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church insists that the Virgin Mary has been appearing regularly in different parts of the country, secular Christians accuse the Church of propagating "fallacies" just for financial gains.  "The appearance of the Virgin Mary is no strange thing and has happened many times – especially during the month of April – since her famous 1968 appearance," bishop Saleb Mata Sawiris told IslamOnline.net on Tuesday, April 1.

"She appeared this year for a long period and was seen in 2000 by millions of Muslims and Copts in Assiut."  Church officials announced in 2000 that the Virgin Mary appeared in Church of St Mark in the southern city of Assiut. Coptic Christians believe the Holy Family stopped in Assiut on their way back to Palestine.

That was not the first time Christians reported such apparitions. The most famous apparition reported by Egyptian Christians was in 1968 at St. Mary's Church of Zeitoun, a suburb of Cairo. Two mechanics working in a city garage across the street reported seeing a nun dressed in white standing on top of the large dome at the center of the roof. The apparition was officially recognized by then Pope Cyril VI. Attending the 40th anniversary of the occasion, Pope Shenouda III told nearly 100,000 gathered faithful that the 1968 apparition has become an international event.

The Egyptian Civilization, 10,000 Years Older than Thought

- 15,000 years old rock art discovered in Egypt

By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

While early Europeans were decorating cave walls with paintings of bison, aurochs and lions, 15,000 years ago the ancient Egyptians made similar rock face drawings and etchings. "It is not at all an exaggeration to call it 'Lascaux on the Nile,'" said expedition leader Dirk Huyge, curator of the Egyptian Collection at the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, Belgium. "The style is riveting. The art is unlike anything seen elsewhere in Egypt," added co-researcher Salima Ikram of the American University in Cairo.

The engravings were sculpted into sandstone cliff faces near the village of Qurta, about 400 miles (640 kilometers) south of Cairo and most of the 160 figures represent wild bulls, the largest being about 6 ft (2 m) wide. The findings "push Egyptian art, religion, and culture back to a much earlier time," Ikram said. Qurta art had already been discovered in 1962 by a group from the University of Toronto, Canada. The Canadian researchers suggested then that the figures were more than 10,000 years old, but later they gave up their hypothesis.

"The Paleolithic experts told them "It's absolutely crazy—Europe is the cradle of art." They must have accepted the fact that that nobody wanted to believe them, but they were right. Discoveries of Paleolithic art in southern Africa and Australia since then have paved the way for the scientific community to accept what they first diffidently suggested," Huyge said. The new expedition discovered also several novel panels of artwork over a 1 mile (1.66 km) long area of 230 feet (70 meters) tall sandstone cliffs.

"There is little doubt the engravings are 15,000-years-old. They depict a now extinct species of wild cow (aurochs) whose horns have been recovered from Paleolithic settlements nearby. The drawings would be examined for lichens and organic grime called "varnish rind" that could be carbon dated or subjected to another process known as uranium series dating. Because the rocks are inorganic, they cannot be dated directly using these methods," said Huyge.

Qurta art is amazingly similar to contemporaneous European art."While the caves at Lascaux are best known for their painted images of bulls and cows, that artwork is actually outnumbered by stone engravings. And the Lascaux engravings are virtually identical to those in Qurta" Huyge pointed out. "I'm not suggesting that the art in the caves of Lascaux was made by Egyptians or that [European] people were in Egypt. The art is so similar that it reflects a similar mentality, a similar stage of development. When people are confronted with similar conditions, this will automatically lead to a similar kind of thinking, a similar creativity." he said.

Now the archaeologists want to discover new and even older Paleolithic ("old stone age") artwork. "There must be older art in Egypt, if we can find it. I think open-air sites like Qurta will be found all over North Africa." said Huyge.

Name Brands Far Predating Modern Capitalism

ScienceDaily (Feb. 19, 2008) — From at least Bass Ale's red triangle--advertised as "the first registered trademark"--commodity brands have exerted a powerful hold over modern Western society. Marketers and critics alike have assumed that branding began in the West with the Industrial Revolution. But a pioneering new study in the February 2008 issue of Current Anthropology finds that attachment to brands far predates modern capitalism, and indeed modern Western society.

In "Prehistories of Commodity Branding," author David Wengrow challenges the widespread assumption that branding did not become an important force in social and economic life until the Industrial Revolution. Wengrow presents compelling evidence that labels on ancient containers, which have long been assumed to be simple identifiers, as well as practices surrounding the production and distribution of commodities, actually functioned as branding strategies. Furthermore, these strategies have deep cultural origins and cognitive foundations, beginning in the civilizations of Egypt and Iraq thousands of years ago.

Branding became necessary when large-scale economies started mass-producing commodities such as alcoholic drinks, cosmetics and textiles. Ancient societies not only imposed strict forms of quality control over these commodities, but as today they needed to convey value to the consumer. Wengrow finds that commodities in any complex, large society needs to pass through a "nexus of authenticity."

Through history, these have taken the form of "the bodies of the ancestral dead, the gods, heads of state, secular business gurus, media celebrities, or that core fetish of post-modernity, the body of the sovereign consumer citizen in the act of self-fashioning." Although capitalism and branding find in each other a perfect complement, they have distinct origins. Wengrow shows that branding has for millennia filled a deep-seated need for us humans to find value in the goods that we consume.

Sure to be provocative, "Prehistories of Commodity Branding" is necessary reading for a wide range of people, from those interested in the workings of ancient societies to anyone who is interested in understanding how marketing has developed into a powerful force in our lives.
